Chimney Sweeps
We have come a long way. Think of the chimney sweep today and Mary Poppins comes to mind. However, the Victorian era occupation was not one for adults. Boys and girls as young as four were pressed into cleaning chimneys.
It was a dangerous job that could result in physical injuries or death. A child cleaned the chimney as they climbed to the top. Falling, choking to death on soot or smoke, deformed limbs or disease were common hazards. Britain in 1788 to set age limits, but the practice continued until technology made it unprofitable.
Modern day chimney sweeps receive training in heating, cooling and home heating hazards. They are usually members of a trade organization that helps to regulate the industry.
